New! Developing AI Competency in Software Engineering Education
This NSF-funded project will investigate how to prepare software engineers for the era of generative AI. We will study how generative AI tools are used by software engineers to understand what knowledge, skills, and dispositions are necessary to effectively use GenAI to develop software. First, we will analyze a public database of prompts from professional software engineers across industries and job roles. Second, we will conduct interviews and surveys with leaders in software engineering companies and practicing software engineers.

New! Characterizing the Process of Global Formation for Engineers
This NSF CAREER project explores how engineering students develop the skills necessary to function in a globalized engineering work environment. We will characterize how this learning takes place in many contexts including programs where engineering students travel abroad (e.g., study abroad, internship abroad) and experiences that do not involve travel (e.g., global courses, domestic internships). We will also produce two online educational modules that can be used to enhance learning in experiential programs.
Current: Global Career Impact Study
This NSF-funded project will explore the impact of global experiences during and after the undergraduate years on global career outcomes, such as career choices, global engineering competency development, and global job responsibilities. We are conducting a multiple-case study of three long-running global engineering programs and have so far carried out our Phase 1 data collection surveying alumni of global programs and a comparison group of alumni who did not participate in global programs as undergraduates.

Recent Publication
Current: Integrating the Humanities and Engineering
This project, in collaboration with the School of Languages and Cultures at Purdue, explores how humanities perspectives can be integrated into engineering education. Through funding from the National Endowment for the Humanities, we developed and evaluated a course called Humanities-Informed Engineering Projects, which is now offered as an engineering elective. We are now working on a systematic literature review to better understand educational philosophies and pedagogies used in humanities disciplines.
Past Project: Reimagining International Research Experiences for Students
This NSF-funded project explored the future of international research experiences for students (IRES) programs in the post-COVID era. We identified benefits, challenges, and best practices associated with integrating virtual components into IRES programs. We also developed insights about differences in student learning outcomes based on individual and program characteristics. Finally, we identified organizational factors that influence the success of the research collaborations. We developed several resources to support the development of new IRES programs, which are available on the project website.

Past Project: International Research Experience for Students in Kenya
This NSF-funded project allowed 21 undergraduate and graduate students to research in community-engaged engineering and the design of localized engineering education in Eldoret, Kenya. Students worked with research mentors at Tumaini Innovation Center to carry out research projects on topics including graduate employability, student mental health, and persistence in technical education.
